“I didn’t want an unsatisfying career. And I didn’t want to commit to one place — either company or one location. I wanted to make my own decisions.” — Rocco Baldasarre

Freelancing is a magnificent gift if you can use it rightly, you can make a ton of money just by sitting at home. If you love to write and play with words, then maybe you’re considering looking for freelance writing work. Freelance writers can take on a range of projects, from a variety of different employers, which can make for an interesting side hustle, or even a varied and flexible career.

Freelance writing is a popular choice, many people want to start careers in it but, the problem is you don’t have any idea how to start a freelance career as a writer.

Thanks to the internet otherwise I would have worked 9 to 5

Being a freelancer, a writer gets a sense of freedom that one can never get from a 9 to 5 job. It also provides them with the luxury of taking up the job according to their needs and requirement and that too without being restricted by location.

I started my freelance career in 2018 (the last year of my college year) my first income was 170INR, only I know it's very less you don't even get a Starbucks coffee in it.

But, at that moment I realize the power of the internet, the power of skill, if you have it then you can make money for sure. I have seen many people taking on occasional freelance projects as an additional income, or moving to a full-time freelance writing career to enjoy the benefits of working remotely and to their own schedule.

What is Content Writing

Content writing is just wordplay. If you can write a lot of content and put it across in words that are reader-friendly, engaging, and informative, you are on your way to becoming a great content writer. “Content” is a broad term and means the use of words to convey things to others- about your business, your idea, your project- simply anything.

There are so many types of content writing and mastering any one of those types can also get you a good career. Here are some of the very popular types of content writing:

  1. SEO Writer
  2. Copywriting
  3. Social Media Writing
  4. Blog Writing
  5. Article Writing
  6. Landing Page Writing
  7. Product Descriptions

also, if your content writer follows on Instagram, I always hire from my IG family

Before getting started -

1st question you should as yourself — Do you love writing?

The art of expressing an idea, opinion, or conveying a message through words is called Content writing, now this was a sweet and short definition of content writing. this question will help you figure out whether your good fit for this or not if your answer is yes the next question you should ask

can you write 1000 words on a topic in a single seating?

content writing requests your attention, focus on that topic it's not like that you can copy from a website and paste it you can do this exercise,

pick up a favorite topic

start writing on it

see how well you can write.

in content writing there is no language barrier it's obvious you will get paid more for English writing but there is a website in regional language that will pay you for writing

find your niche -

Picking what you want to write about is an important first step. By choosing a niche you’re enthusiastic about, you’ll find you can write well without needing to spend hours on research — and your energy will shine through in your work. You could choose one of these popular niches, or pick a favorite hobby or interest of your own:

finding your niche can be a little hard as you have no experience but, here is a thing write all the topics you love for me

finding your niche is all about

a subject you love

a subject you can talk about

a subject you can write about

here is a list of a few topics that I will suggest you

  • Travel
  • business
  • Fitness and diet
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Family, relationships, and parenting
  • Yoga and meditation
  • Cooking and nutrition
  • Finance and budgeting

I Can write about business, freelance, travel this is my niche the same way you can write all your niche and start writing on all topics.

Then you will realize your favorite niche that you can talk about endlessly and write endlessly the only drawback of having a niche is you will have few strong clients but you might miss trending topics.

LEARN -

The next and most important thing is to learn. You need to know what platform you would use, how it works, and what exactly you need to do. Though there are many outs there who will teach you how WordPress or CMS works, it is not always the case and you might actually lose money if they think you don’t know how to use these platforms.

Setting up your own blog is free, you can write at your own pace, and you don’t need any qualifications as such. You require only a writing style and voice that resonates well with your target audience. So it’s a win-win situation on all fronts.

you have to Learn little of everything -

how to write a blog post

how to write web pages

how to write a copy

Video scripts

Explainer video scripts

Long-form content

writing differs from book or essay writing there is structure, point, headlines,

if you're serious, you have to learn how to search keywords, what is SEO friendly article, etc. those things you can google usually it takes 2 3 months to learn this skill.

BUILD PORTFOLIO -

Just like you do with a Resume or a CV, it is a good practice to keep an online or digital work portfolio of your work that you can share with your clients.

You need to understand that just like regular jobs even freelance work requires you to have a work portfolio that you can use to apply for freelance writing work.

A prospective client would want to see samples of your published work and thus it is also a good idea to regularly update your portfolio with the latest work and writing contents.

If you’re new and just starting out link your portfolio to your blog which has your latest work and also a list of all your previously published work. This will help you ease your process of being hired as the prospective client would be to see that you can actually write and what exactly is your style of writing.

you can use a free website like medium and buy a domain and host everything on your own blog

PITCH CLIENT —

Once you are confident enough about your job and are ready to take up client work the best way to pitch clients either on LinkedIn or Facebook. You’ve now put together your portfolio and started to build your readership in your chosen subject. It’s time to start to pitch for more work

if you want to work with clients, sell yourself.

Understand how to cold mail, how to approach clients.

  • Develop a short, effective ‘elevator pitch’ so you’re always ready to tell someone what you do. You never know who you’ll run into who may need a writer.
  • Join networking groups
  • Stay active on social media
  • Read read

remember starting is hard its not easy you will face lot of challenges in it.

there are years where nothing happens there are days when everything happens

I posted blogs for two years, nothing happened and in one month I got clients I got paid website everything happened

pro tip-

never forget that as a freelance writer you don’t have a fixed-job. keep experimenting until you satisfy your own creative urges.
